According to a report by Counterpoint Research, India’s cellular Internet of Things (IoT) module shipments grew by 32 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025, significantly outpacing the global growth rate.
This strong growth was largely driven by the central government’s nationwide smart electricity metering initiative under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), which aims to deploy 250 million prepaid smart meters to improve the efficiency of power distribution companies (DISCOMs). The scheme has a total outlay of Rs 1.5 trillion. As of January 2024, nearly 1.98 million meters had been installed.
Further, as per the report, globally, cellular IoT module shipments rose by 16 per cent during the same period, with India, China, and Latin America leading the demand surge across key applications such as smart metering, point-of-sale systems, and asset tracking.
