Japan’s KDDI Corporation intends to participate in a project being led by Google to roll out a new 8,300 km submarine cable system connecting Japan and Singapore. The Southeast Asia Japan Cable (SJC) system, which is scheduled for completion in 2012, is expected to cost around $400 million and will provide an initial bandwidth of 17 Tbps. Four other companies in the region have also signed up for the project. They are Globe Telecom (Philippines), Network i2i (a wholly owned subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, India), Reliance Globalcom (through FLAG Pacific, Bermuda) and Telemedia Pacific (Hong Kong/Indonesia).
