Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) has acquired a 75 per cent stake in Sky Network Limited, a licensed Wi-Max operator. The deal, worth $1 million, is expected to facilitate SLT’s Wi-Max service plans.

SLT has carried out field trials on Wi-Max services and is awaiting frequency allocation to launch the service in Sri Lanka. The company has applied for Wi-Max frequency from the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka, but despite repeated reminders, there has been no progress in obtaining the frequency. The company has also developed the necessary infrastructure to operate Wi-Max services and does not want to lose the first-mover advantage in launching the service in the country.
