The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has sought the release of spectrum by non-telecom users such as Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the railways, and Rajasthan Atomic Power Corporation. It has advised that spectrum in the 824-864 MHz band paired with 869-889 MHz, which is allocated for CDMA operators, should be released. This spectrum had been allocated prior to the National Frequency Allocation Plan, 2002. Since then, most non-telecom companies have shifted to other mediums like optic fibre but have retained the spectrum as back-up.
