The government has asked Research In Motion (RIM) to provide Indian intelligence agencies with interception keys to enable real-time tracking of its BlackBerry messenger and corporate email services by August 15, 2011. This comes after discussions between the government and RIM over a comprehensive interception solution were inconclusive.

It is believed that the government may consider suspending RIM?s services if it fails to meet this deadline.

In January 2011, RIM claimed to have delivered a solution that would enable operators to address access requirements for its BlackBerry Messenger and BlackBerry Internet Service email.

A government panel had suggested that in the short term, India should ask companies offering encrypted communication services to either locate their servers in India or share encryption keys with security agencies. As a long-term solution, it had suggested that the upcoming central monitoring system be empowered to intercept all forms of communication.
