According to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the number of requests for mobile number portability (MNP) increased by 24 per cent in May 2011 to 10.57 million, from 8.54 million in the preceding month.

According to TRAI, out of these requests around 0.63 million originated from Haryana, where MNP was implemented in November 2010. The most requests were received from Gujarat (1.05 million), Rajasthan (0.82 million), Karnataka (0.79 million) and Tamil Nadu (0.77 million).

According to visitor location register (VLR) data for May, the number of active mobile users stood at 588.13 million, as against the total subscriber base of 840.28 million.

The proportion of VLR subscribers is approximately 69.99 per cent of the total wireless subscriber base reported by operators. In terms of circles, Jammu & Kashmir has the highest proportion of VLR subscribers with 80.97 per cent, followed by Assam (77.43 per cent) and Maharashtra (75.11 per cent).

Mumbai has the lowest proportion with 55.35 per cent. In terms of operators, Idea leads with 92.33 per cent, followed by Bharti with 89.10 per cent. MTNL is at the bottom with 34.39 per cent.
