Nokia has inaugurated a new fixed networks research and development (R&D) facility in Tamil Nadu, marking its largest such centre globally, as the Finnish telecom equipment major further strengthens its presence in the state.

The expansion follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Nokia and the Tamil Nadu government during the chief minister’s visit to the United States in August 2024, the state’s industries minister said.

The minister added that Nokia has set up the new facility at SIPCOT Siruseri in Chennai, generating more than 200 high-skilled jobs. He noted that the first phase of the project will involve an investment of Rs 2.70 billion, revised upward from the earlier plan of Rs 2.20 billion, while the second phase is expected to entail an investment of around Rs 3 billion.

The Siruseri campus will house Nokia’s largest fixed network R&D laboratory worldwide, with a focus on next-generation fixed broadband technologies. The centre is expected to function as a global testbed for innovations in 10G, 25G, 50G and 100G optical networks, fixed wireless access (FWA), and related technologies.

Further, according to the minister, Nokia is among the earliest and most significant R&D investors in Tamil Nadu and remains deeply embedded in Chennai’s telecom and network engineering ecosystem.
