
About 27,000 employees of the state run telecom operator, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited are expected to retire over the next 10 years, thereby bringing down the employee costs of the debt ridden operator.
At present, around 70 per cent of the total revenues of MTNL is being used for paying salary to 34,000 employees. Meanwhile, the operator has also identified 13,000 employees whose skills are not relevant in the changing technological environment in the telecom sector and plans to retire them as well.
According to a standing committee report, which was tabled in Parliament recently, MTNL?S turnover in 2014-15 stood at Rs 36 billion and the operating loss stood at Rs 30 billion.
