Bharti Airtel has come under the Department of Income Tax?s (IT) scanner once again. The case pertains to the tax due on its overseas roaming charges in the period between 2001-02 and 2006-07

The IT department has issued notices to the operator in this regard for the second time. Prior to this, the IT department had sent the operator a demand notice asking it to pay Rs 10.67 billion for the 2007-08 and 2010-11 period . The department argued that these payments can be categorised as ?fee for technical services?. Therefore, the operator has to pay an amount as the tax deducted at source (TDS).

Subsequently, the operator approached the Delhi High Court in this regard, which issued a stay order on the IT department. Bharti Airtel did, however, shell out Rs 2.369 billion as interim payment.

Now, the IT department has asked the operator to pay up its outstanding dues for financial years 2001-02 and 2006-07.
