The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has asked the Ministry of Corporate Affairs for it views on the Idea Cellular-Tata Group stake sale issue.

DoT had said that the information provided by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs on the 2006 deal, in which the Tata Group exited Idea Cellular by selling their 48 per cent stake in that company to the Aditya Birla Group, was already available with it and did not help draw any conclusion.

Therefore, DoT has asked the Ministry to interpret available data. Prior to this, the Ministry had declined to provide its views on whether the Tata Group had violated licence conditions that prohibit Indian companies from owning more than 10 per cent in telecom companies offering services in the same area.

Also, the Ministry of Law and Justice had told DoT that the question pertaining to equity holding of the companies? had to be determined by the DoT from its records.

DoT also plans to write back to the Ministry of Law and Justice, seeking its opinion for the second time in this case.
