The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) reportedly plans to impose penalties totaling Rs 15.94 billion on five mobile operators for allegedly understating revenues and hence paying a lower revenue share during 2006-07 and 2007-08.

DoT has estimated that Reliance Communications (RCOM) will have to pay Rs 5.51 billion as penalty, while Bharti Airtel will have to pay Rs 2.92 billion. Similarly, Vodafone will have to pay Rs 2.54 billion.

Idea Celluar will have to pay about Rs 1.13 billion, Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL) will need to pay Rs 2.73 billion and Tata Communications about Rs 1.20 billion.

It is believed that DoT has scritinised the operators? special audit reports and concluded that were discrepancies in the revenues reported by these companies.

It is believed that DoT will issue showcause notices to these companies after obtaining Kapil Sibal, Minister of Communications and IT?s approval.
