Hong Kong’s Office of the Telecommunications Authority has stated that three mobile operators have successfully bid for a total of 9.6 MHz of radio spectrum in the 1800 MHz frequency band. China Mobile Hong Kong, Hong Kong Telecommunications (a unit of PCCW) and SmarTone paid a total of HKD46 million ($5.9 million) as upfront spectrum utilisation fee (SUF) for their respective 3.2 MHz allocations. The operators are required to pay an annual SUF (for the period September 30, 2009-September 29, 2011) of HKD232,000 for each frequency band per year. For the subsequent 10-year period, the companies will be charged HKD2.32 million for each frequency band per year or 5 per cent of the annual network turnover, whichever is higher.
