Sri Lanka Telecom’s wholly owned subsidiary Mobitel has launched 3G services in the country. The new network will enable Mobitel’s users to take video calls at the cost of a voice call, browse the internet, watch local TV channels and access online video streams with better quality of content. The firm also intends to introduce new 3G-enabled mobile content by January 2008. Mobitel has so far invested $200 million on its 2.5G and 3.5G networks and is planning to introduce an IP telephony alternative to Skype in the next two to three years. The company also aims to increase its base stations to 1,500 from 1,000 by the end of January 2008.
