Former DoT secretary Nripendra Misra has succeeded Pradip Baijal as the new chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). During Misra’s long service with the government, he has worked with the commerce ministry and has looked after WTO matters. Among his other responsibilities, Misra is expected to regulate the broadcast sector, including the vastly unorganised cable TV sector. TRAI, under Misra, will have to focus on regulation with regard to emerging technologies, while continuing to frame policies that sustain present growth rates.
