China Unicom plans to spend an extra 1.82 billion yuan this year on upgrading its GSM network to 2.5G standard. The upgrade will provide high speed mobile data services for the Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Guangdong provinces. The company will raise capital expenditure by up to 10 per cent this year, from 18.23 billion yuan in 2004 to 20.05 billion yuan.
