Twitter has reportedly lost legal indemnity in India due to its failure to comply with the new IT rules which required the microblogging site to appoint key officers in India.

As per industry sources, the government has said that Twitter did not comply with rules despite letters from the ministry and added that no order will be issued to remove the intermediary status of the social media platform.

Twitter, however, has said that it had complied with the new IT rules and had appointed an interim chief compliance officer. While announcing the appointment, Twitter said that the details of the official will soon be shared directly with the IT Ministry.

Earlier this month, the government had issued a notice to Twitter giving the microblogging site one last opportunity to immediately comply with the new IT rules. The government has said that Twitter’s failure to adhere to the norms will lead to the platform losing exemption from liability under the IT Act.
