The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released the Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report for the quarter ending June 30, 2025. As per the report, the total number of internet subscribers increased from 969.10 million at the end of March 2025 to 1,002.85 million at the end of June 2025, registering a quarterly growth rate of 3.48 per cent. Of the total, 44.71 million were wired internet subscribers and 958.14 million were wireless internet subscribers. The broadband subscriber base stood at 979.71 million, up 3.77 per cent from 944.12 million in March 2025, while narrowband subscribers declined from 24.98 million to 23.14 million during the same period.

Meanwhile, wireline subscribers rose sharply from 37.04 million to 47.49 million, marking a quarterly growth rate of 28.20 per cent and a year-on-year increase of 35.26 per cent. Wireline tele density also grew from 2.62 per cent to 3.36 per cent. The report noted that wireless (mobile + 5G fixed wireless access) subscribers increased from 1,163.76 million at end of March 2025 to 1,170.88 million at end of June 2025, reflecting a growth rate of 0.61 per cent during the quarter. Within this, mobile subscribers rose from 1,156.99 million to 1,163.03 million for the reported period. Further, wireless tele density moved up to 82.18 per cent.

The overall number of telephone subscribers in India rose to 1,218.36 million, with the overall teledensity increasing from 85.04 per cent to 86.09 per cent. Urban subscriptions grew to 679.86 million with teledensity of 133.56 per cent, while rural subscriptions reached 538.50 million with teledensity of 59.43 per cent. The rural share of total subscriptions declined slightly from 44.53 per cent to 44.20 per cent.

The report mentioned that financial performance showed mixed trends. Gross revenue (GR) for the telecom sector stood at Rs 966.46 billion, down 1.63 per cent from the previous quarter, while adjusted gross revenue (AGR) rose by 2.65 per cent to Rs 813.25 billion. On a YoY basis, GR, applicable GR (ApGR) and AGR increased by 12.34 per cent, 11.03 per cent and 15.26 per cent, respectively.

Furthermore, average revenue per user (ARPU) for wireless services increased 2 per cent to Rs 186.62, compared with Rs 182.95 in the March 2025 quarter. Prepaid ARPU was Rs 187, while postpaid ARPU stood at Rs 182.72. The average minutes of usage (MOU) per subscriber declined 1.93 per cent from 1,026 to 1,006.
