According to Strategy Analytics, the tablet applications processor market reached $2.7 billion in 2012 registering a growth of 83 per cent.

The market was led by Apple with a market share of 48 per cent. The other four vendors in the top five players in the tablet applications processor market include NVIDIA, Texas Instruments, Samsung and Qualcomm.

Qualcomm has 43 per cent revenue share in the smartphone applications processor market in 2012. Qualcomm?s Snapdragon processors contributed to the company?s success in the market. Apple has 16 per cent revenue share in 2012. The company?s in-house designed A series processors, featured in smartphones including the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. Samsung has a  revenue share of 11 per cent. The company?s Exynos applications processors featured in devices like the Samsung Galaxy S III and Note II. MediaTek was the fourth leading chip-maker in revenue share terms in 2012 as the company?s integrated processors gained strong traction in low-to-mid range smartphones. Broadcom ranked number five as the company?s applications processors featured in multiple low-end Android Samsung smartphones in 2012.

Intel, a new entrant in to the smartphone market, managed to garner a revenue share of 0.2 per cent in the applications processor market in 2012. Intel?s Clover Trail+ dual-core x86 Atom chip could help the company increase its revenue share in 2013.

Going forward, the success of Microsoft Windows tablet operating system would determine the revenue share of chip makers Intel and Qualcomm.  The China-based chip vendors commanded a volume share of 20 per cent in the smartphone applications processor market in 2012.
