According to Gartner, the desk-based and mobile PC market in India reached 1.9 million units in the first quarter of 2014, registering a decline of 20.6 per cent over the corresponding quarter in 2013.

The research firm states that the PC shipment market declined in absence of any significant order by the government agencies. Further, the Indian PC market was also impacted by the deferment of purchases by majority of the enterprises for the quarter under review. However, over the next two quarters, Gartner expects the demand for desk-based and mobile PCs growing both among the enterprise and consumer segment.

Further, in the first quarter of 2014, the PC market in India was led by HP with 23.3 per cent market share. Dell and Acer were ranked second and third with a market share of 14.4 per cent and 13 per cent, respectively.

Gartner concludes that white boxes shipment (including parallel imports), which accounted for 39 per cent of the overall desktop market, declined by 7 per cent in the first quarter of 2014 in comparison to the corresponding quarter in 2013. Meanwhile, mobile PC shipments declined by 32 per cent on year-on-year basis due to lack of sales to government agencies.
