
According to the data released by Cellular Operators? Association of India (COAI), the GSM subscriber base in the country increased from 726.90 million in April 2014 to 733.09 million in May 2014. In the month of May 2014, GSM operators added 6.19 million new subscribers registering an increase of 0.85 per cent over the previous month.
For the period under review, Bharti Airtel added maximum number of new subscribers at-1.66 million taking its total subscriber base to 208.243 million with a market share of 28.41 per cent. Bharti Airtel was followed by Uninor which added second highest number of GSM subscribers in the month of May 2014. The operator added 1.31 million users taking its total subscriber base to 37.88 million with a market share of 5.17 per cent. For the period under review, Idea Cellular added the third highest number of GSM subscribers. The operator added 1.16 million users taking its total subscriber base to 137.72 million with a market share of 18.79 per cent.
The country?s second leading operator, Vodafone India added 0.98 million of GSM users taking its total subscriber base to 168.27 million with a market share of 22.95 per cent. Further, Aircel, added 0.94 million users, taking its total subscriber base to 72.09 million, while Videocon Telecom added 0.13 million new users, with a total subscriber base of 37.88 million. Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited added 0.011 million new users with a total subscriber base of 3.27 million.
Other operators including Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and Loop Telecom did not add any new GSM subscribers in the month of May 2014.
