The Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), the technical arm of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL) to collaborate on standardisation, research and innovation in convergence and broadcasting technologies.
BECIL, a Mini Ratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), will work with TEC on joint studies, the development of India-specific standards and contributions to global standardisation frameworks. The partnership aims to strengthen national capabilities in telecom-broadcast convergence while supporting initiatives such as Digital India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
The collaboration will span a range of emerging and strategic technology domains, including direct-to-mobile and 5G broadcast, digital rights management for internet protocol television and other digital distribution platforms, digital sound broadcasting, conditional access systems, SMS and future technologies such as artificial intelligence enabled broadcast services, accessibility solutions and intelligent user interfaces.
The two organisations will also provide need-based technical consultations to DoT, MIB and TRAI on policy and regulatory matters. The partnership is expected to enhance India’s participation in international standardisation bodies including the International Telecommunication Union’s standardisation and radiocommunication sectors and the Third Generation Partnership Project, while accelerating the development of indigenous standards and testing frameworks for next-generation broadcasting and converged communication technologies.
