The Telecom Disputes Settlement & Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) has imposed a Rs 8.85 million penalty on Reliance Communications for reportedly selling activated SIM cards without adequate verification in the Rajasthan circle.

Prior to this, the Telecom Enforcement, Resource and Monitoring (TERM) cell of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had confiscated 186 customer application forms from one of RCOM?s distributors in Rajasthan.

Upon scrutiny, the TERM Cell found that the operator had not properly verified the subscribers? details before issuing a connection.

Thereafter, DoT asked the operator to present its view on the matter. However, it was unconvinced by RCOM?s argument and imposed a penalty on it.

RCOM then approached the TDSAT in this context, challenging DoT?s penalty. RCOM had argued that the connections under scrutiny were already disconnected and the distributorship was terminated and thus, the penalty is unjustified.
