According to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) findings, the progress of the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) project has been slow. As per the findings, only 500 km of fibre cable per month has been rolled out, as against the target of 30,000 km per month for the completion of the NOFN project by March 2015. Also, the pace of trenching and ducting for laying the cable has been slacking. In this regard, the government has sought DoT?s views to speed up the process for its completion prior to the decided date.
The NOFN project is being implemented by Bharat Broadband Network Limited but the laying of cables is being done by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, RailTel and Powergrid. The project to connect 100,000 gram panchayats with broadband network is to be completed by March 2015.
