According to Gartner, the revenues of global semiconductor companies declined by 2.6 per cent in 2012, compared to 2011.
During this period, company-wise, Intel retained its leadership position, followed by Samsung, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and Toshiba.
As per the research firm, the top 25 semiconductor vendors’ revenue declined faster at 2.8 per cent than the industry as a whole, and accounted for almost the same portion of the industry’s total revenue ? 68.9 per cent in 2012 ? compared with 69.0 per cent in 2011.
Meanwhile, Intel recorded a 3.1 per cent decline in revenues, owing to a decline in personal computer shipments. However, it retained the leading market share position for the 21st year in a row. Intel’s share was 16.4 per cent in 2012, from 16.5 per cent in 2011.
Samsung was second in the pecking order. The company registered slow growth in the DRAM bit and NAND flash markets. Its overall revenue, however, increased from smartphone application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and application-specific standard products (ASSPs).
Meanwhile, Qualcomm (third in the order) witnessed a 31.8 per cent increase in revenues from its semiconductor business in 2012.
Texas Instruments retained its fourth-place ranking, although Toshiba fell to fifth place in semiconductor shipments.
