With an aim to provide high-speed internet services to users, Reliance Communications (RCOM) plans to use CDMA spectrum solely for promoting its dongle business.

The operator is going to shift its existing subscribers and those who use mobile internet to the GSM network, and use the CDMA network to exclusively promote its dongle business. The move is expected to result in substantial availability of free spectrum with the operator which can be used for supporting heavy data traffic i.e. the dongle business.

Currently, RCOM claims to have 50 per cent share in the dongle market. Going forward, it is eyeing to corner half of the market share resulting from incremental dongle sales in the country. The operator is expecting its sales in the dongle business to be in sync with the growth in PCs (personal computers), laptops and smart TVs in the country. RCOM is also betting big on growing demand for Wi-Fi dongles to drive growth in its dongle business.

Currently, RCOM with a subscriber base of 116 million has about 34.1 million data users on its network, out of which 9.1 million are 3G subscribers.
