The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has come out with recommendations for telecom network management during disasters. According to regulatory authority in times of natural disasters and emergencies, telecom networks witness a significant increase in telecom traffic leading to network congestion thereby impacting disaster management efforts during such crisis.
In its recommendations, TRAI has proposed that a priority call routing should be instituted by the service providers to ensure that calls of workforce responsible for response and recovery during disasters are routed on priority basis. Further, the regulatory body has suggested a pilot project to ascertain the cost of equipment and infrastructure required for setting up a system that can ensure normal functioning of the telecom networks in the event of a disaster or a calamity.
TRAI has sought views of industry stakeholders to look into the technical issues involved in implementation of priority call routing in the country.
