Reliance Communications (RCOM) is reportedly planning to offer 4G services in the Gujarat circle, using its CDMA network. It has been estimated that the company would require investments to the tune of $40 million (Rs 2.55 billion) to procure and deploy the necessary equipment and infrastructure.
The company plans to start with Gujarat as it recently acquired 2.5 MHz of spectrum in the 800 MHz band, which together with its existing spectrum holding of 2.5 MHz can be used to offer 4G services. However, the spectrum allotted earlier can be used only for CDMA mobile services, as per regulations. The company is therefore reportedly in discussions with the Department of Telecommunications to allow the former to pay the market-discovered price for the spectrum for the remainder of its licence period expiring in 2021 and enable it for the use of any technology.
