
R.K. Upadhyay has been appointed the chairman and managing director of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited.
Upadhyay is a 1975 batch officer of the Indian Telecom Services and currently heads the Telecom Consultants of India Limited.
He obtained a bachelors? degree in electronics from Banaras Hindu University in 1974 and an MBA in marketing management from the Indira Gandhi Open University. He is also a graduate of the Defence Staff Services College (DSSC), Wellington and also has an M.Sc degree from Madras University. He worked in the Department of Telecommunications from August 1975 to July 1996 in the areas of planning, installation and commissioning, commercial administration and operations.
After a stint from 2000 to 2003 in BSNL as general manager, Jammu & Kashmir circle, he joined TCIL in June 2003. After joining TCIL, he worked in several capacities, including as chief project director, Algeria, group general manager (new technology) and executive director (project monitoring), etc. Thereafter, he became director (projects) in 2005 and subsequently became chairman and managing director in 2007.
The Government had appointed a search-cum-selection panel under Sam Pitroda, head, National Knowledge Commission for this purpose.
Over the past two months, the panel touched base with as many as 20 candidates from the private sector but there were no takers for the post.
