Alcatel-Lucent has won a contract for the deployment of the 9,000 mile Europe India Gateway (EIG) submarine cable system from the UK to India. The cable system is scheduled to be completed by 2010. Alcatel-Lucent is one of two submarine cable network suppliers for the project that is worth over $700 million. The company will be responsible for the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of the cable system. The EIG consortium also includes AT&T, Bharti Airtel, BT, Cable & Wireless (C&W), MTN, Omantel, PT Comunicações, Saudi Telecom and Telecom Egypt.
