Qualcomm has become involved in a patent litigation on assisted GPS technology. In a lawsuit claiming $1 billion in damages, US homeland security company Gabriel Technologies has claimed that Qualcomm’s subsidiary, SnapTrack, improperly appropriated the intellectual property rights (IPR) as part of a joint development agreement with Locate Networks. Gabriel says that these rights were acquired by its own subsidiary, Trace Technologies, and that Qualcomm wrongly seized 90 patents by claiming ownership. Gabriel has requested the court to declare that the contested technology, related patents and other IPRs are owned by Gabriel. The company has also made claims of a breach of the joint development agreement, fraud, misappropriation and unfair competition against Qualcomm.
