Private telecom operators have reportedly requested a two-year extension to comply with the provisions of Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, once the rules are notified, citing concerns over compliance burden.
Telecom companies have discussed the DPDP rules with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to address concerns about consent managers’ roles, compliance challenges, and duplication of processes. The industry needs sufficient time to implement changes, better coordination between the DoT and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Moreover, operators have expressed concerns about growing regulatory requirements and potential overreach associated with the new rules.
