Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh has announced that his government will set up a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to study the 2G spectrum scam. According to Singh, the 2G spectrum allocation controversy has already stalled the winter session of the parliament. ?Our country can ill-afford the parliament getting paralysed during this crucial budget session. This will be a disservice to those who have elected us,” said Singh.
Singh, facing the biggest crisis of his seven-year rule with the opposition accusing his government for allowing such large scale corruption to go unheeded, had little choice but to reconcile to a JPC. ?We are a functioning democracy and must try to resolve our difference is the spirit of collaboration not competition,” noted Singh
Earlier, on the first day of the budget session, President, Pratibha Patil had said that the government was considering fast tracking graft cases. She also said that a group of ministers is considering all measures, including legislative and administrative, to tackle corruption and improve transparency.
?The need is to strive to make the domestic environment more conducive to investment, encouraging public as well as private investment, and domestic as well as foreign investment. We have to maintain the momentum for reforms on a wide front,” stated Patil.
