The government has informed Parliament that 5G services in India have been expanded to 738 districts and around 100 million users so far, witnessing one of the fastest 5G roll-outs in the world. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Devusinh Chauhan said that a total of 394,298 base stations have been installed in the country. In addition, the gross revenue of telecom service providers has crossed Rs 3 trillion for the first time in financial year 2022-23.
Reliance Jio has launched the first AirFiber service in Kerala. The inaugural AirFiber connection has been established in Thiruvananthapuram. According to the telco, this milestone marks a significant enhancement to the digital landscape in the state, enabling residents to experience the seamless integration of Jio’s AirFiber technology with top-notch fibre and mobility services.
OneWeb India has received the necessary authorisations from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre to launch Eutelsat OneWeb’s commercial satellite broadband services in the country. OneWeb India is the first organisation to be granted this authorisation, which means that Eutelsat OneWeb can launch commercial connectivity services as soon as spectrum allocation has been granted by the government.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has rejected a proposal by telecom operators to provide 5G services within the airport premises, using low radio frequency power output. Owing to the fear that the frequency can interfere with aircraft altimeter and cause disruptions, the DGCA rejected the proposal.
The government has informed Parliament that it has taken a large number of initiatives to improve broadband connectivity in Lakshadweep and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. It also informed about two optical fibre cable (OFC) projects of the central government connecting these islands with the Indian mainland. These are the Chennai-Andaman Nicobar Islands OFC project and the Kochi-Lakshadweep islands submarine OFC project.
