The Ministry of Home Affairs has asked the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to examine security concerns regarding telecommunication networks in the final draft National Telecom Security Policy. The ministry has directed DoT to come up with the guidelines for establishing a secure telecom network and lay down the procedures for checking and auditing the security systems in the network.

In addition, DoT has also been asked to identify security agencies which will be allowed to intercept calls on real-time basis for unencrypted audio, data and video formats. Further, DoT has to come up with provision for ?priority communications for specified users? across all types of networks including wireless, landline and broadband.

The final draft National Telecom Security Policy has to be approved by the National Information Board, following which DoT will submit it with the Cabinet Committee on Security for final approval.
