S Krishnan, secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has launched a centre of excellence (CoE) for intelligent internet of things (IoT) sensors and India’s first innovation centre for graphene at Maker Village in Kochi, Kerala.

The CoE for intelligent IoT sensors is a unique facility established by MeitY and the government of Kerala to catalyse the development of sensors within the realm of intelligent IoT systems covering a broad spectrum of applications of intelligent sensors in networks, devices and sensor systems.

Meanwhile, the graphene centre also has been established by MeitY and the government of Kerlana along with Tata Steel Limited with the aim to foster research and development (R&D), product innovation and capacity building in the area of graphene and 2D material systems.

Digital University Kerala and Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology, Thrissur, are the technical partners for setting up these centres in Kochi. The complete full-fledged facility for R&D, incubation, innovation, skilling, capacity building, testing and certification shall be established at these centres by experts from these agencies.

Krishnan addressed the gathering on the importance of intelligent IoT sensors and graphene technologies in driving digital transformation and economic growth. He said that the creation of a complete ecosystem for start-ups in the area of IoT sensors and graphene and 2D materials are the main objectives for setting up these centres. He added that the complete solution with material to product/system development shall be provided at these centres in the respective areas.

During the event, Krishnan launched Hardtech 2024, Maker Village’s annual flagship programme, which shall bring together leaders from industries, start-ups, investors, academia, and R&D organisations in the field of electronics hardware design and manufacturing.
