The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), while dismissing media reports claiming that the government plans to compel smartphone manufacturers to share their software source code, said it routinely holds consultations with the industry on matters related to safety and security.

MeitY said these consultations are part of regular engagement and focus on safety compliance, electromagnetic interference and compatibility (EMI/EMC) norms, Indian language support, interface requirements, and security standards.

The wider set of proposed mandates, which could include informing the government about major software updates and allowing source code access for testing in designated labs in India, are linked to the 83 measures outlined under the Indian Telecom Security Assurance Requirements (ITSARs).
