ITI, BSNL and MTNL together incurred losses of Rs 48.93 billion in 2009-10: Milind Deora

August 18, 2011 | Archive News

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Milind Deora, Minister of State for Communications and IT, said that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) and ITI together incurred losses worth Rs 48.93 billion in 2009-10.

While BSNL incurred a loss of Rs 18.23 billion in 2009-10, MTNL posted a loss of Rs 26.11 billion and ITI posted a loss of Rs 4.59 billion. Deora added that the companies? financial results for 2010-11 are yet to be finalised.

Also, Deora said that BSNL had asked the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for financial help to operate commercially unviable services. This proposal is currently being examined by DoT.

Prior to this, the Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises (BRPSE) had recommended that MTNL and ITI merge their operations with BSNL, which will help all three companies stem losses.

Deora said that this proposal was being examined by a Committee constituted by DoT.
