The global research firm Gartner reports that global sales of mobile phones shrank by 2 per cent in the first quarter of 2012.
Interestingly, the last decline in the sales of mobile phones globally was witnessed in 2009.
The decline in the sales has largely been attributed to the slow demand in the Asia-Pacific region. Further, there has been a lack of sufficient new product launches from leading manufacturers. Also, the sales have been affected as several users delayed upgrades in their phones in a hope of getting better smartphone deals later in the year.
In view of this decline, Gartner has lowered its full-year cell phone market outlook for 2012 by 20 million handsets.
