According to the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), the telecom sector witnessed an increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) from $9 million in April-May in 2013-14 to $1.5 billion for the same period in 2014-15.

The increase in FDI inflows in the sector can be attributed to the investments by 4G licensees in rolling out their networks in India. At present, Airtel and Aircel offer 4G services using spectrum in the 2300 MHz band.

The telecom sector had witnessed a total FDI inflow of $1.3 billion in 2013-14, as compared to $0.304 billion in 2012-13, $ 1.99 billion in 2011-12, $1.66 billion in 2010-11 and $2.55 billion in 2009-10.
