The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on August 22, 2025, advised machine-to-machine (M2M) service providers, central ministries and departments, along with internet of things (IoT) device manufacturers, to embrace one global standard for M2M (oneM2M) and deploy solutions built on the standard to ensure both interoperability and security.
Additionally, oneM2M carries immense potential to improve user experience and safety. By enabling interoperability, it addresses the challenge of vendor lock-in that customers or end-users often encounter in their daily device applications.
Moreover, these standards enable devices such as IoT gateways, feedback devices, smart electricity meters, and end-point devices from one original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to seamlessly interact with applications and platforms offered by any service provider, regardless of the underlying communication technology.
Further, the DoT noted that IoT adoption in India has been rapidly increasing across industries such as manufacturing, automotive, and utilities. However, the fragmented ecosystem caused by the use of proprietary IoT solutions has underscored the urgent need for standardisation, the department highlighted in its advisory.
