The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is soon likely to approach the Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DeiTY) to formulate a roadmap for deploying cloud services for government organisations. The move is in line with the government?s GI cloud initiative, under which all government departments will be asked to adopt the cloud platform for their e-governance projects.

DoT had earlier approached the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for recommendations on migrating computing and data storage functions of government organisations to the cloud platform.

DieTY is likely to give recommendations on building secure state-owned data centres. It will also be asked to suggest solutions for overcoming data security challenges faced by the country, owing to the poor power infrastructure.

The objective of the GI cloud initiative is to encourage IT adoption in government and enable it to partner with private technology in developing cloud solutions delivery platform.  Presently, DeiTY is managing cloud services applications with the state governments of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. It is also developing a national data centre to serve as a repository of e-governance apps.

DeiTY’s operations in migrating functions to the cloud platform are also aimed at leveraging cloud computing to deliver affordable e-services, accessed over the Internet. Such e-services include the public distribution system, land records, e-health and e-education.
