Ciena has completed the acquisition of Cyan, provider of software and platforms for software-defined (SDN) networks, for $488 million. Earlier, in May 2014, Ciena had entered into a definitive agreement to buy Cyan.

Following the acquisition, Ciena has created Blue Planet division for unifying the software business of both the companies under a single brand. The division, which includes Ciena?s former Agility business division, will be helping customers automate services across both physical and virtual domains, to create revenue opportunities, and lower costs associated with hardware and operations.

Mike Hatfield, formerly Cyan?s president, will lead the Blue Planet division as senior vice-president of Ciena. The Blue Planet product portfolio will include Cyan?s software applications, including Planet Orchestrate and Planet Operate, as well as Ciena?s SDN Multilayer wide area network (WAN) Controller and its applications, V-WAN, Agility Matrix and network management solutions.
