China has launched the world’s first 4G mobile communication system in Shanghai. The Chinese home-grown 4G system provides speeds of up to 100 Mbps for wireless transmission of data and images, which is much faster than that of current mobile technology. The trial rollout has cost $19.2 million. The country has set a goal of conducting field tests and putting 4G services into trial commercial use between 2006 and 2010. Meanwhile, China has yet to award domestic telecom operator licences to build 3G mobile phone networks.
