The central government has set asset monetisation targets of Rs 9 billion for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Rs 45.73 billion for Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) for the financial year 2025-26.
In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, the Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, clarified that these efforts are part of the revival packages approved by the Union Cabinet for both public sector undetakings. He also reaffirmed that there is no plan to shut down BSNL or MTNL, and that the proceeds from asset monetisation are being utilised in line with cabinet approvals.
The revival plan, approved by the cabinet on October 23, 2019, includes the monetisation of assets under the guidelines set by the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM). Since 2019, BSNL has registered land assets worth Rs 13.41 billion. However, MTNL has not yet completed any asset sales.
