
The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) has transferred the indigenously designed and developed Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology to seven manufacturers, including ITI, BEL and Sai Infosystem.
The technology is aimed at fulfilling the requirement of major national programmes like the National Optical Fibre Network and State Wide Area Network. The technology can also be used for providing broadband connectivity in rural, North-East and tribal areas, as well as expansion of defence, railways and other strategic networks.
The GPON technology has been tested, validated, field evaluated and made operational in Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited?s network in Ajmer.
According to a statement issued by C-DOT, ?The other manufacturers to which the technology is being transferred include VMC Systems, United Telecoms and SM Creative Electronics. In addition, an agreement for transfer of technology has been signed with Tejas Networks for customised development and electronics cooperation.?
