According to Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Minister of Communications and Development of the North Eastern Region, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) plans to transition from 4G to 5G starting in June 2025. This shift will align with the completion of its 4G rollout across 100,000 sites.

According to Scindia, the upgrade will involve installing additional base transceiver stations (BTS) and implementing software enhancements to facilitate a smooth transition to 5G connectivity. He also highlighted India’s homegrown telecom technology, currently deployed by BSNL, as a viable alternative to existing global telecom solutions.

Furthermore, the government is considering the establishment of a Telecom Manufacturing Zone (TMZ), akin to a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), to support domestic telecom equipment production through dedicated testing and certification infrastructure. The minister also underscored the government’s ongoing efforts to curb spam calls and telecom fraud, emphasising close coordination between telecom regulators, financial institutions, and enforcement bodies.
