Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is taking rapid steps to stem losses in its landline business. The incumbent is reportedly planning to undertake an expansion project for the same and will invest Rs 4 billion, say news reports.

Also, by the end of 2012, BSNL plans to introduce services like video calling and free call transfer from mobile phones for its landline consumers.

The company has started the process of converting its existing telephone exchanges into next generation network exchanges. BSNL currently has about 37,639 telephone exchanges and its plans to convert these to NGN are aimed at reducing operational and maintenance costs.

BSNL plans to promote adoption of NGN-based fixed line connections among corporate customers, as these phones can be converted into a small exchange for transferring calls within an organisation via the extension number route for employees. The company will also provide various value-added services on its landline phones.
