According to Gartner, Inc, the year 2013 will see large-scale adoption of big data technologies, following a few years of experimentation and early adopter successes.

Following a survey with IT leaders across the globe, Gartner reports that about 42 per cent of respondents stated that they had invested in big data technology, or were planning to do so within a year. An increasing number of organisations are realising the importance of big data and are looking to adopt strategies and skills required to take its advantage. Companies are also examining different business models to identify the return on investment.

The survey results reveal that a large number of organisations are in the early stages of adopting big data. However, a few of the organisations have thought through an enterprise approach or realised the profound impact that big data will have on their infrastructure, organisations and industries.

Further, organisations are undertaking big data initiatives in a rapidly shifting technological landscape with disruptive forces that produce and demand new data types and new kinds of information processing.

Gartner suggests that companies are adopting big data out of necessity and conviction. However, organisations have to cut through hype in order to identify the ideal big data technologies, approaches and project alternatives for their businesses. Despite these challenges, the research firm predicts that by 2015, 20 per cent of global 1000 organisations would have established a strategic focus on ?information infrastructure.??
