
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has stated that it is focusing on several projects under the government?s Digital India programme. The focus areas include the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN), setting up of Wi-Fi hotspots in the country, promoting mobile banking services as well as mobile governance.
The NOFN project, which is being majorly led by BSNL, aims to provide broadband connectivity to 250,000 gram panchayats in India by end-March 2017. Also, BSNL is planning to connect the commercially viable places like historical sites, educational institutes and malls with Wi-Fi hotspots. At present, BSNL is working on establishing Wi-Fi hotspots in Varanasi.
Further, the telecom operator is working on the mobile banking project which will provide m-wallets to the citizens under the Jan Dhan Yojna. It will be followed by undertaking m-governance services at various tiers. The proposed model includes information on services like kisan seva, mid-day meal, passport, and digital mandi through text messages. It also believes that the revenue opportunity in the field of m-governance has increased with the introduction of the Digital India programme.
