Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL) employees’ union, Sanchar Nigam Executives’ Association (SNEA), has sought an immediate intervention from the telecom minister in the matter of renewal of BSNL’s licence and allocation of 2G spectrum.

BSNL intends to use its 2G network to provide 2G and 3G services till it gets the 4G spectrum.

In its recent letter to Ravi Shankar Prasad, minister for telecommunications and electronics and information technology, the union said that an undue delay in renewing BSNL’s unified access service license (UASL) and re-issuance of 2G spectrum is seriously affecting telco’s GSM and 3G services across the country. According to BSNL, the telecom minister should direct the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to renew its pan-India cellular mobile telephone service (CMTS) licence and allocate 2G spectrum in 20 circles.
